Labor Day weekend Gardner Lake boat crash injured two people

A former City of Gardner employee crashed a boat at Gardner Lake over Labor Day weekend that injured two people.

One of the two people injured was the boat driver’s mother Barbara Cook, who had her arm severed. The other victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. 46-year-old James Michael Allen has been charged with boating while under the influence and two counts of aggravated battery.

Court records said Allen appeared to be intoxicated and swayed while he stood in place as police interviewed him. He blew a .18 BAC.

Allen was arrested and placed on a $50,000 surety bond. He posted bail on September 8.

A probable cause document alleged Allen was driving a boat on See Gardner Lake at a high rate of speed when it crashed just after 11:30p.m. on Sept. 4 hitting an outcropping of rocks near the dam and public dock at 152nd Street and Gardner Road.

A person on board told police Allen had asked if he could drive the boat and once he took the wheel, he crashed into land.

The court document stated that people who approached the boat to help saw four people on board, one of who appeared to be unconscious. The boat drove off before the onlookers were able to render aid.

It also stated a 911 caller said one of the people on board injured their arm in the accident and that it looked ìlike hamburger meat.î Gardner Lake is a no wake lake with a maximum 10 miles per hour allowed for boats.
