Does it Matter? I think so!

Most days are just so ,so. You do what has to be done, you try to solve problems and give a hand when you can.
I was raised to believe that nature is important to all of us. My children were raised to respect and take care of what lives around them.
I went home for lunch the other day. I usually don’t I stay till my day is done and then head home. It was the rainy cool day and such relief from out 3 digit temps.
I was planning on a short stop. In out grab some food and give Max a walk.
On my way out the door I noticed a little hummingbird trapped in my garage. We have drywalled baffles that let the heating and cooling duct work pass from side to side. She had flown into one of these sections and wouldn’t allow herself to dip low enough to see the big outdoors just ahead of her.
I tried to convince her with a soft broom. She would have non of that! I had watched a great special on the discovery channel the other night about how they fly and all the energy they expend with those tiny wings. If I remember right they need to feed about every 15 minutes.
I of course panicked. I asked a neighbor who was retrieving his mail from the community mail box and he suggested taping a fishing net (aquarium type) to my broom and helping her out that way. That was totally do-able .
So I taped and tried and tried to catch her. When I finally succeeded she flew right back up into the baffles. I really couldn’t give up. She couldn’t die. I wouldn’t allow that.
Final try I caught her again. She stopped struggling long enough for me to lower her down to see the exit. She flew out and hopefully got a drink and some food from my neighbors house across the street.
My kids and I have moved many many turtles out of roadways. We rescued an orphaned opossum. My daughter helped a big black snake sunning on a side road into the safety of the tall grass one time.she also fostered cats and kittens last year. My son and his wife adopt the dogs who need a second chance and give them lives worth living.
I know a lot of you think this is silly or even strange. Just animals? Who cares? Well we teach and learn compassion in my family.
I hope that someday if I need a hand, one will be extended to me. No strings attached. Just someone on the other end who also shows compassion.
