Lessons learned on lying, stealing recalled

My mother always said she couldn’t abide a liar. “Even if you murder someone,” she’d always admonish me.“Tellmethetruth, and then we’ll handle the situation.” I never questioned if my momthoughtIwasgoingto grow up to be a murderer, or whatshewoulddotohandle thesituation.Wherewelived, I’d seen my mother back off full grown derelicts with nothing but her stare and an upliftedindexfinger.Ihadno doubt she could handle a pack of detectives, and I could picture myself telling PerryMason,“NosirIdon’t need a lawyer, just send in my mom; she’ll handle the situation.” Raymond Burr was my mother’s favorite actor.

Dear Mr. Troll,

We havenít met but Iím familiar with your work. In fact, today I saw the comment you made to the young woman whoíd tweeted a photo of herself smiling as she carried a plate of donuts. I wonít repeat it in case she reads this newspaper. But youíll recall the gist was that her teeth were unattractive. What Emporia Has Lost

The news coming out of Emporia last week, with at least 30 members of the faculty of Emporia State University fired on one day, was terribly sad. That’s according to Google, which is probably not as accurate as my father was, since he knew every person in town.

“You do you” the kids say

Life is difficult enough without comparing our lives to anyone else’s existence, and I wonder if social media is damaging the self-esteem of not only our young people, but people of all ages. After all, our self-esteem isn’t directly correlated with our age. The act of comparison means that something or someone will come up short. Or as my Grandpa Harpole used to say, “Come up a shorty horse.” When it’s a lifestyle or goals being compared it rarely turns out well. If you’re struggling with thoughts that you may be falling short of expectations the worst thing you can do is to judge your life, job and/ or school performance to that of others’ performances. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time and so will you. As the young people say, “You do you”.
