JOCO approves additional funding for Sunflower Ammunition improvements

Lynne Hermansen Lhermansen@cherryroad.com In two seperate votes Thursday, the Board of County Commissioners approved $15 million in funding to improve road infrastructure and a fire station for hazardous material suppression capability for the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant land. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced earlier this month Japan’s Panasonic Corp would be building a multimillion dollar mega-factory to produce electric vehicle batteries on theNorthwest section of land the U.S.

Johnson County Community College receives Stem Scholars Program Award

Lynne Hermansen Lhermansen@cherryroad.com The National Science Foundation awarded $1,487,766 to Johnson County Community College’s STEM Scholars Program. Sharice Davids, Kansas 3rd District State Representative, announced Thursday, July 21 the program will help assist highachieving, low income students with financial need pursuing degrees in STEM.

Gardner Edgerton School Board discusses bathroom policies

Lynne Hermansen Lhermansen@cherryroad.com People’s preferred pronouns and the school district’s bathroom usage policies were the topic of an added agenda item at the Monday school board meeting. Jeff Miller, council member, brought forth a proposed general statement of policy to each board member with a request to add it to an already heavily scheduled meeting.

4-H members partcipate in Shooting Sports National Championships

Five Johnson County 4-H Shooting Sports members went to Grand Island, Nebraska this summer, competing in the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships. Members and teams representing nine disciplines competed against each other as individuals and as partof their state teams. Teams of up to four members from Kansas were picked from top placing individuals at Kansas 4-H State Shooting Sports matches. Individuals may only participate in an individual discipline once at Nationals during their 4-H career. Awards were presented for each of three days of competition and overall discipline winners.

The Gardner Lions Club

The Gardner Lions Club are working with the Gardner Middle schools to put up one of these at each of them. They are looking for groups or individuals that would like to help them fill them for the kids.
