Rhonda Humble was a force to be reckoned with. She ran The Gardner News for almost 40 years; along with other local newspapers at a time the journalism field was dominated by men.
The GEHS Debate squad was at BVSW for their first tournament of the year. Two squads were in action. Ellie Parks with Lily Campbell, and Kate Miller with novice Jace Blum. There were a lot of proud moments for this coach and some very close battles, but as the dust fell we left with Parks/Cambell with a 2/3 record and Miller/Blum with a 1/4 record. This being our first tournament there is no doubt this will be a competitive season and our team is only going to get stronger. If you see any of these students congratulate them on their hard work. The team will be traveling to Paola this weekend.
Johnson County held a public workshop Thursday, Oct. 6 at New Century AirCenter to give area residents an update on plans for the airport site. Kory Lewis, principal for Coffman Associates Airport Consultants, led visitors through the county’s multiphase process of updating the comprehensive compatibility plan. “The airports combined have over a billion dollar economic impact for the county,”he said. “People work here and spend money here.” Lewis said they wanted to protect the public from noise but were not determining the impacts with noise. “Our goal is to have a safe airport,”he said. Lewis said the county can’t tell an aircraft where they can and can’t fly under FAA rules.
The City of Gardner recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness at the Oct. 3 City Council meeting. Todd Winters, mayor, said while considerable progress had been made in the fight against the disease it still remained the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of death among women in the U.S.
The Gardner Police Department presented to City Council Monday, Oct. 3 the reasons why they would be coming back to request funding for the hiring and retention of officers.

For the fifth year the City of Spring Hill and City of Gardner held a breakfast networking event for women in business. Sharon Mitchell, President of the Spring Hill Chamber, said it started as a joint project with the Gardner Chamber president at the time Jason Camis and Mayor Carol Lehman as a pow wow at the Perkins Gardner restaurant and it was something they all felt was strongly needed.
Vote Common Good, a national group of evangelical pastors made a tour stop in Gardner at the Johnson County Fairgrounds overflow parking lot, Friday Oct. 7. Their mission is to travel the country in support of candidates who will stand up to partisan extremism and defend democracy without legislating religion. They hosted the Friday event in support of Keith Davenport, who is running against incumbent State Representative Bill Sutton for District 43, and U.S. Senate candidate from Kansas City, Kansas Mark Holland. Davenport’s sister Kayla Mellinger accompanied him in playing guitar and singing songs about freedom and democracy.
